The Brief

To replace the high energy consuming water chillers at the Microsoft Headquarters, Reading, Berkshire with a more efficient chilled water system using the latest MTA technology and to install the new equipment with the minimum downtime to the building’s air conditioned environment.

.

The Solution

Polar Cooling’s expertise in the air conditioning industry and working in conjunction with MTA, came up with the perfect solution by using MTA GALAXY TECH series chillers, with environmentally friendly R410A refrigerant, the chillers represent the best solution for centralised hydronic air conditioning for large areas and offer energy savings in all operating conditions.

The MTA Galaxy Tech System provides:

Z

High seasonal energy efficiency

Z

High reliability and continuity of operation

Z

Integrated hydraulic group

Z

Reduced noise levels

The multi scroll technology used in the GALAXY TECH series of chillers proportionally adapts and controls the cooling capacity produced to the actual demand from the entire system, which allows a decrease in the hydraulic volume required for thermal inertia as well as considerable energy savings.

The high number of compressors and independent refrigeration circuits reduce the possibility of downtime, increasing the level of overall reliability of the system, thus ensuring continuity of operation in a wide range of applications. The modular condensing section allows for the progressive cycling of fans according to the instant thermal load, helping to increase the seasonal energy efficiency of the units.

The GALAXY TECH chiller series is equipped with brazed plate heat exchangers in AISI 316 stainless steel with high energy efficiency and low water pressure drops. System management is entrusted to microprocessor control that manages to independently monitor all the main functions, including the adjustments, alarms and interface with the outside.

Polar Cooling implemented the project as follows:

Phase 1 of the installation consisted of disconnecting the electrical connections and water pipework and removing the old chillers via craneage from the various buildings.

Phase 2 consisted of lifting the new MTA Galaxy chillers onto the roof and modifying the chilled water pipework to suit, reconnecting the electrical supplies and commissioning of the equipment. .
